I Had a Specific Plan For This Blog...

But plans change.

I was going to pick a couple stories or two off MLB.com and give you some unbiased opinions like I've done in recent history.  But then I saw something on my Twitter feed from mlbtraderumors: White Sox Agree To Terms With Colon.

WHAT?!

colon.jpgBartolo Colon is coming back?  I was hesitant to believe this since it came from MLB Trade Rumors.  Key word there is rumors.  Then I hit up WhiteSox.com again, and there it is.  It still says reportedly, but I'm sure the White Sox wouldn't allow it to be put up by an MLB.com reporter if it wasn't true.

I really didn't get to watch my Sox when Colon was on the team in 2003 because I was in San Francisco.  From what I've read, he didn't do too horribly.  However in recent history, he was injury-plagued.  He has back problems and only started seven games for the Red Sox last season.  Yes, he won the Cy Young in 2005 when he was with the Angels, but that doesn't mean much when you have back problems that have limited your playing time in the Majors.

There are conflicting opinions over at the WSI Message Boards regarding Colon's return.  One seems to be something to the effect of "WHAT IS THIS?! NOOOOOOOOO!"  One seems to be indifferent.  And one seems to be ok with this since it's low risk, potentially high reward.  Since the posters over there have proven to be incredibly knowledgeable, I trust their judgments, so I don't think I'm jumping on the "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" bandwagon.  However, if he pulls a Jose Contreras in 2007, then I'll be angry.  Jose was not the greatest player that season.  In fact, he was downright awful.

colon2.jpgI'm really amused by many of the comments in that thread about Colon's size.  Someone commented that he's out of shape and aging.  Someone else said he was never really IN shape.  Someone else said "Round is a shape."  Another person commented that the concessions will do well with him arriving.  More commenting that the Sox will wear black more since it's more slimming than the pinstripes.  On other sites, I've read that pizzerias in the area need to watch out.  I'm easily amused, so I've been giggling hysterically while writing this.

Now that I've gotten that out of my system (the reaction to the signing, not the giggles.  Trust me, I'm still giggling), I no longer have a desire to write about some of the headlines on MLB.com.  But while watching ESPN earlier today, something not related to baseball came up on SportsCenter, and it's something that makes me incredibly angry.  So I'm going to finish this blog with a commentary on my pick for the worst person to ever play a professional sport: Michael Vick.

i hate you.jpgI despise that man more than anyone else, especially in that picture because it looks like he loves dogs.  I hate a lot of professional athletes because of certain aspects of their personalities and certain things they've done.  But Michael Vick takes the cake.  He is the epitome of what I hate.  Boiling it down, he's an animal abuser.

As you will learn if it's not yet clear, I'm incredibly opinionated.  Sometimes my opinions offend or anger people.  I've learned to deal with that because my opinions are just as valid as yours, even if I offend or anger you.  That being said, I believe child abusers, child rapists, and animal abusers should die.  Yes, I know it's a rather drastic opinion.  But the people who hurt children and animals are hurting those weaker than they are.

Back to Michael Vick.  I cannot imagine any circumstance where watching two dogs fight each other until one of them dies is entertaining or amusing.  These beautiful creatures were trained to kill, and people like Michael Vick give pit bulls the bad reputation that they'll maul anyone at any time.

Take a look at this picture.
deja3.jpgThat is my baby.  That's Deja.  Deja is a pit bull-Rottweiler-Australian shepherd mix.  I've seen her devour a bone in about 10 minutes because of her powerful jaw.  But because of the way she was raised and trained, the only person she would ever attack is someone who tried to hurt her family.
deja4.jpg
Michael Vick took the innocence of a dog and turned it into something vicious.  Something dangerous.  Something that I wouldn't want to be around for fear of my life.  Pit bulls get a bad rap because of people like Michael Vick.  People have crossed the street when they see me walking my dog because they're afraid of her.  Seriously, how can you be afraid of this?
deja2.jpgIf she was vicious, if she was a killer, there's no way I could have put fairy wings on her and taken a picture.  She would have ripped my face off.  But my stepdad trained her right.  Although I was a new person to her when she was four when I met her, she knew right away that I was family and that I was not to be hurt.  Vick didn't teach any of his dogs that.  All of his dogs were trained to fight.  Trained to kill.

I can't imagine how many innocent dogs died because of him.  Luckily for some of the ones that were taken from him have been rehabilitated and now live in loving homes (it's a slide show that you should click through).  Others weren't so lucky.  The unlucky ones are the reason I believe Michael Vick deserves to die a slow and incredibly painful death.  I won't apologize for it.  I won't change my mind.  He can apologize all he wants.  He can spend the rest of his life in prison.  He can donate money to the ASPCA.  But he still deserves that slow and painful death.  If not for the ones that he already killed, then for the one he'll never touch: mine.

Wow. That post had me grinning one minute (about Colon) and growling the next (about Vick). Colon is yet another of these low risk/high reward signings going around. I can't get over how many free agent pitchers are trying to come back from injuries and/or ineffectiveness. I keep hearing rumors about the Yankees and Freddy Garcia. As for Vick, the whole thing turns my stomach. I can't even imagine such cruelty.

Michael Vick - I think Mark would have to fix the filter again if I wrote what I really feel about him, so I'll leave that one alone.

Colon - I COULDN"T believe that when I read it! His stay with the Red Sox was a disaster - I hope the White Sox know what they are doing!

Wow, I just saw that Rockpile Rant was on your sidebar. Thank you, I'm honored and I'll be paying attention to your blog from here on out...You really made my day...D

Oh, I couldn't agree with you more, I have two pugs and a puggle. Vick can rot in hell...D

Jane - I've started to notice that my posts are occasionally a but bipolar. If Freddy can stay healthy, he's still a good pitcher, but when we traded him in 2006 to get Gavin Floyd, he was starting to decline. I've heard about him going to the Yankees, Mets, or White Sox.

Julia - my diatribe about Vick would have been waaaaaaaay longer and much more profanity laden if we didn't have the filter. I hate the asterisks, so I censored myself. It was difficult to do! As for Colon, I trust Kenny Williams implicitly. Sometimes I worry, but he almost always knows what he's doing. I'd rather keep him in the bullpen, but I'd be ok with him as a fifth starter.

D - I'm glad I made your day. I haven't commented yet on your blog yet since I just found it, but I'll be there with the comments sooner or later! It's nice to know that Vick can't touch our dogs. He deserves more punishment than he'll ever get.

Jen,
You had me giggling too, with all the comments people have written about Colon. He wasn't great for the Red Sox in '08, but like you said--he was injury plagued! Definitely one of those low risk potentially high reward acquisitions. Michael Vick is just terrible!!
Your pitbull Deja is adorable!!

Elizabeth - I hope Colon won't potentially screw us over. That's the last thing my poor mind needs! I miss my dog...she's back in Chicago with my mom. :( I need a pet that's more exciting than a fish! Hahaha!

Those are some special pictures of a cute puppy and I agree with you whole heartedly. What he was involved in with those dogs makes me want to puke. The dog is the single most loyal creature I have ever known and would die for it's master. It's a shame so many died never knowing the love of a family and owner.

I like the Colon signing. He has had some injury problems but if he can get healthy he can give 10-12 wins easy. He can give that if he returns to half of what he used to be. By the way, Michael Vick is a... well, you know what I would like to say.

Tom - I love my dog, in case you couldn't tell. She'd do anything for me. She's the first dog I've ever had, and I'm so glad I have her.

Ben - Given the problems Colon has had, I'd be happy with 10-12 wins. Obviously, I'd prefer more, but I'll work with what I've got!
