Oh Trade Deadline...
I woke up this morning (at least I think it was morning still...it might have been noon-ish...I digress), and I knew today would be a hectic baseball day. After all, it was the Trade Deadline. Would Roy Halladay end up somewhere? I heard rumors about Victor Martinez...would he go somewhere? And most importantly for me, would Kenny Williams do anything? Only time would tell.
If the Sox were going to do something, part of me expected Josh Fields to be involved. After we traded Brian Anderson to the Red Sox for Mark Kotsay, someone had to be moved to Charlotte. The two names that were thrown around most were Dewayne Wise and Fields. Since Kotsay can play both the outfield and first base, I had no guess as to who it would be. It turns out, it was Fields. After being sent down, he asked to be traded. I don't blame him because he has the talent to be a starter somewhere, but something here just wasn't working for him. So I expected any trade to involve Josh, even though I REALLY don't want him to leave this organization. I know he deserves a starting spot because, deep down, there's talent there, but I absolutely adore him. He called me "darlin" so I have a soft spot for him. Lucky for me, Joshy is staying.
As the day progressed, I heard about the Jarrod Washburn to Detroit trade. And profanities began to flow through my head. The last thing the Sox need is the division leader acquiring someone good. Then I heard the Twins acquired Orlando Cabrera. I hate that guy. After his time spent in Chicago, I really hate that guy. And now he's on the team who is half a game ahead of us in the division. More profanities flowed, mostly because I hate OC, but partly because he's a Twin now and has the potential to do damage.
I had to go up to Loyola to harass them, so I left here about 2:00 Central time. Why did I need to harass them? Well, I sent in my readmission application in the middle of June. They received it on June 26th, and I still can't register for classes. Every time I called or emailed them, they did something on the computer and said to try again tomorrow after it registered. And every time, I was unable to register for classes. Fed up with the run-around they gave me, my brother drove me from the suburbs into the city. That's, like, an hour away. Yes, I'll be commuting that every day once I get my classes. Come to find out, they're still processing my application, and I should get a phone call next week, allowing me to register.
I left Loyola at about 3:30. The trading deadline had passed by about half an hour when I got a text from Rachel:
I repeat. Jake Peavy is a White Sox.
As soon as I read the (at the time) mini-article, I was incredibly excited. Yet another ace on our staff! Granted he's still on the DL, but he could start rehabbing soon, right? Then I immediately thought "Ooooooh Kaybee and Hyunyoung are gonna be p*ssed!" While I'm sure it's of little consolation, my reaction upon finding out that we sent both Clayton Richard AND Aaron Poreda to the Padres was: "BOTH OF THEM?!?!?! NOOOOOOOOO!!!" Fear not, Padres fans. While you're losing your ace, you're getting at least two pitchers who are gonna be studs in Richard and Poreda. I don't know much about Dexter Carter, and Adam Russell is...well, I've never been much of a fan. Maybe he just needs a change of scenery.
To make my day even more fantastic, the White Sox beat the Yankees tonight. That's two in a row, as they beat them yesterday as well. Carlos Quentin hit another home run, and it seems that TCQ is getting back to his marvelous hitting. I'm very happy that he's returning to form, and as far as I can tell, his plantar fasciitis is not really an issue anymore. And there were stolen bases galore! OK, maybe three isn't "stolen bases galore," but the Sox never steal three bases in a game. They may try, but they're not successful very often. On top of that, they even had a double steal. Chris Getz stole second, and the throw home from Jeter was a little off, so Jayson Nix stole home.
Oh, but let's not stop there. Guess who went 4-for-5 tonight?
He scored a run and he batted in a run. A double and three singles. It's not often that AJ gets four hits in a game. So I was doing the happy dance like it was my job. I love when AJ has a great game. Even when other favorites (like Gordon Beckham tonight) don't do so well (0-for-4), knowing AJ is having a great game will forever put a smile on my face. It's like he knows the keys to my heart. :)
Tomorrow features a matchup between John Danks and AJ Burnett. Danks has been a little off in recent history, so here's hoping he comes out of whatever little funk he has and pitches an amazing game. However, I'm not gonna lie to you. I'm more excited about Sunday's matchup: Mark Buehrle vs. CC Sabathia. Can you blame my excitement?
Finally, I have a picture for you to caption. As usual, have fun and be creative. This is Mark Buehrle after retiring Joe Crede for his 42nd consecutive batter retired, setting the new Major League record.

Did I just read that Clayton got traded to San Diego for Jake Peavy?!?!?!?Well, I had no idea. I was in my brother's Navigator with a dying cell phone. But I did my quick research before my phone said "Jen, I hate you. I'm dead." Yes, Jake Peavy is a White Sox.

I was super sad to see him leave. Jake is THE man and it was a great pleasure and honor having him as a Padre for eight years. We lost another icon but this trade was for his best and the team. It so shocking how this move happened when I was in school, without expecting Jake getting traded to a brand-new team. I miss him already and being a Padres fan is VERY tough. Please take great care of him. You guys will LOVE him.

Well you guys picked up a hidden gem off the Trade Deadline.
Jake Peavy just got his boot off his ankle and might be a few weeks away from being totally ready to smack some strikeouts, but he is a true gem on the mound.
I shudder right now to think of Danks, Buehrle, Peavy and Floyd.
But that is what it might take to secure the division. You can bet I will be checking the boxscores from today until October to see how the fearsome foursome end up the season.

Hyunyoung - I know some Sox fans are still angry about him rejecting the trade back in May, but many of them are incredibly excited for our team. I read elsewhere that the trade was literally finalized with 23 seconds left before the deadline. It was one of those trades that no one expected to happen. I know that Clayton and Aaron will do WONDERS for you. Clayton has developed soooooooooooooo much as a starter already this season with Contreras and Colon being in the minors and on the DL. You have two guys who will do wonders for you. Take care of them, and they'll be awesome for you.
Renegade - I believe Kenny Williams said we need a fifth starter for, like, three games (yesterday included) before Peavy will be ready. So I think that's an August 24th start against Boston. I'm so stoked for this rotation, considering we'll have those four for something like three years AT LEAST. I can't wait until this team lights it up, and with the last two games a win against the Yankees, I KNOW it's happening soon.
Julia - I make no promises, but I'm hoping for a White Sox winner this afternoon. I think they'll still be on a high from getting Peavy, and since he gets here today, you just CAN'T lose for him. :) We gotta show him what he's coming to. And great caption!

JAKE EDWARD PEAVY!!! How could you leave us?? Man, you can bet I was upset. I cried all the way to Dulles on the plane. But it's OK. At least it wasn't the dodgers. At least he's on a winning team. At least you get him :) But he's not going to be the big ace anymore. You guys have an incredible pitching staff, and he's probably not going to be #1 anymore. So there Jake. Anyways, it was a terribly sad trade, but these dudes we got in return had better work out for us. GO JAKE!!!

Still waiting on the Peavy debut here on the Southside. I hear he might be ready sooner than at first thought... hope so. That game will be a sell out and I will be there. I ain't missing something like that!

Any team would want Jake Peavy, I'm glad he's in the AL now though, far less for me to have to worry about. Last night, Atkins went 2 for 3 with four RBIs and one of those was a homer, it was kind of amazing.
